Description
New enlarged edition, Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950) was still in his teens when he attained enlightenment through a remarkable experience, as if undergoing death of the physical body, while remaining in full consciousness. He left home for the sacred hill of Arunachala where he taught the purest form of Advaita Vedanta (non-duality) through the simple discipline of self-inquiry. His teaching, his principal instruction to all his devotes was always to meditate on the question "Who am I"?. In this book Arthur Osborne gives an account of the life and teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi. It has a special relevance to our age with its outlines of a religion based on the Indian scriptures which is essentially spiritual, without ceasing to be rational and ethical.

Description
The Russian novelist and moral philosopher Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) ranks as one of the world's great writers and his "War and Peace" has been called the greatest novel ever written. The purpose of all true creative art, he believed, is to teach. But the message in all his stories is presented with such humor that the reader hardly realizes that it is strongly didactic. The seven parts into which this book is divided include the best known Tolstoy stories. "God Sees the Truth, but Waits" and "A Prisoner in the Caucasus" which Tolstoy himself considered as his best, "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" depicting the greed of a peasant for land, the most brilliantly told parable, "Ivan the Fool" these are all contained in this volume.

It analyzes the concepts of Mind and its States with reference to healthy and unhealthy attitudes towards life and deals with the psychological factors and problems in Meditation which is geared to an individual's capacity and temperament.Theories of perception, a predominant feature of Indian and Buddhist philosophies, are discussed together with the interpretation of the world on the basis of these theories as well as their critiques.

Buddhist practices such as mindfulness (in which calm centering and keen awareness of change coexist) and compassion (in which the self is recognized as both powerful in itself and interdependently connected with all others) can be important resources for contemporary women, while feminism can expand the traditional horizons of Buddhist concerns to include social, historical and psychological issues. DESCRIPTION:
The Journey with Death deals with the problem of death as well as the problem of life. Avoiding the traditional approach to death with consists of a description of the after-death condition, the author has tried to find a solution for the problems of survival and reincarnation, of communication with the dead and of the interval between two lives. He has also dealt with the problem of separation which death poses to ordinary men and women. The author would prefer to call the so-called dead as only the departed with whom one can establish links of communication, through a journey into realms of consciousness. Out of the depths of his own experience in watching the shadow of death fall on one who has loved and cherished, Rohit Mehta has sought answers to the perennial questions that have haunted the human heart and mind for untold ages: What is death? Why does it come? Whither does it take one? Is death the end of existence? Can we recognize each other? Mehta deals with these queries not merely from a philosophical basis of understanding the events and conditions peculiar to the after-death states, but he takes the reader step by step on a journey of discovery that satisfies the inner longing for assurance and inspires the heart in its quest for peace which is also the profound mystery of life itself.SPECIFICATION:

DESCRIPTION:
Among the priceless teachings that may be found in the great Hindu poem of the Mahabharata, there is none so rare and and precious as this, 'The Lord's Song'. Since it fell from the divine lips of Shri Krishna on the field of battle and stilled the surging emotions of his disciple and friend, how many troubled hearts has it quieted andstrengthened, how many weary souls has it led to Him! It is meant to lift the aspirant from the lower levels of renunciation, where objects are renounced, to the loftier heights where desires are dead, and where the Yogi dwells in calm and ceaseless contemplation, while his body and mind are actively employed in discharging the
duties that fall to his lot in life.
That the spiritual man need not be a recluse, that union with the divine Life may be achieved and maintained in the midst of worldly affairs, that the obstacles to the union lie not outside us but within us-such is the central lesson of the BHAGAVADGITA
Annie Besant in the preface to the book.

'It is a matter of exceeding difficulty to express the elation of the personality to the ego...I think that on the whole the best way to put it is to say that the former is a fragment of the latter, a tiny part of him expressing itself under serious difficulties. We meet a person on the physical plane; we speak to him; and we think and say that we know him. It would be little nearer to the truth to say that we know a thousandth part of him. 'Even when clairvoyance is developed- even when a man opens the sight of his causal body, and looks at the causal body of another man- even then, though he sees a manifestation of the ego on his own plane, he is still far from seeing the real man.'Extract from the first chapter

DESCRIPTION:
The Theosophical manual by Annie Besant helps us understand Reincarnation as the law of necessity for human progression and perfection, and has been constantly gaining ground among the more thoughtful students of life and evolution. Reincarnation for a human is the modus operandi of the vast evolutionary journey. Reincarnation and Karma are the twin doctrine of hope and responsibility. The fundamental cause of Reincarnation, as of all manifestation, is the desire for active life, the thirst for sentient existence. A human, being self-conscious, may build up to do evil or may build up to do good by his or her own thoughts. The resistance of wrong thought and action, patient service to others, a scrupulous devotion to unselfish ends - these build up for the reincarnating human a brain which is the fit instrument for their increased manifestation, a brain in which good tendencies will find grooves ready for their easy working.SPECIFICATION:

This work is not intended to be a biography of H.P.Blavatsky. A major portion is devoted to her writings, particularly to the manner in which they are written. The Predominant motif is to describe the superior spiritual status she attained before she commenced her stupendous work as a benefactor of the human race. As there is no single English word that conveys the spiritual powers she acquired the author turns to the orient, to the land of Tibet, for a suitable term - Tulku. This Tibetan term is clarified along with other little known words and a philosophical exposition is given in an illuminating manner, dealing as it does with some of the mysteries of human life which have been studied for ages in the East.SPECIFICATION:

THE main object of this publication is to present, in simple English, some of the works of Sri Sankaràchàrya in which he tries to expound, in a popular style, the philosophy of the non-dualistic Vedanta of which he was the well-known founder. With this view the present translation has been rendered free of technical words and phrases, and, in some instances, literal and technical accuracy has been purposely sacrificed in order to make the translation readably and comprehensible by itself independently of the text. It is however hoped that the juxtaposition of the Sanskrit text and the English translation will serve the double object of enabling the student of Sanskrit to understand the text better and to correct, by a reference to the text, any defect of expression in the translation as an inevitable result of the attempt to garb it in a popular style. To those that have had no training in metaphysics or dialectics and have neither the leisure nor the capacity to read the original standard works of
Sankara,---mostly elaborate commentaries on the Vedanta aphorisms, the Bhagavad-Gita and the Upanishads---a publication of this kind should be specially helpful for a proper understanding of the broad outline of Sankara s philosophy of non-dualism. The work is fresh and powerful in expression, but also lyrical and soulful, delivering
a masterful work which does full justice to the original.

DESCRIPTION:
In classical India, the Nyaya-Vaisesika school upheld a form of realism, best known as Naive or Direct Realism. Professor Matilal here presents the Nyaya view and critically examines it against the opposing Buddhist version of phenomenalism and idealism. The dispute between the Buddhist and Nyaya schools of thought lasted a little over twelve centuries; and although the author's approach is largely historical, it is informed by the belief that the issues raised by this dispute have a significant contribution to make to modern philosophical concerns. His reconstruction of Nyaya arguments meets not only traditional Buddhist objections but also those of modernsense-data representationalists. One may understand the history of philosophy in a global sense. The dispute that lasted a little over twelve centuries between the Nyaya and the Buddhist over the nature of perception, the critique and criteria of knowledge, and the status of the external world, is undoubtedly an important chapter in the history of global philosophy. It is author's firm conviction that modern philosophical discussion stands to be enriched, and our insight deepened, by a proper analysis and critical study by philosophers today. The need for painstaking research in this field can hardly be over-emphasised.

DESCRIPTION:
This book presents a comprehensive exposition of Vedanta Desika`s Satadusani, a polemical classic of Visistadvaita Vedanta, devoted to the criticism of the doctrines of Advaita Vedanta. The thought-provoking arguments found in the Sixty-six Vedas of the original text are brought together, analysed and discussed in a systematic manner under eight broad headings: Pramanas Perception; Consciousness; Individual self; Brahman; Universe; Avidya; Sadhana and Mukti. In presenting the dialectics of VedantaDesika in a vigorous and scholastic form the author deals with numerous issues that the Vadas raise--epistemological, ontological, religious, and ethical. Thought the issues are many, each discussing a specific problem, they are ultimately directed to refute the central doctrine of Advaita, viz., that Brahman which is pure consciousness devoid of all determinations, constitutes the sole Reality and every thing else is illusory. While carefully tracing the fundamental differences between the two systems of Vedanta, he points out that the differences are mostly due to the difference in the stand- points they adopt.Faithfully conforming to the original in letter and spirit, this work will serve as a useful introduction to the study of the Sribhasya of Ramanuja. A distincy contribution to the study of classical Hindu thought, this book should be of interest to students of Philosophy in general and
