DESCRIPTION:
In 1930, the American historian and philosopher Will Durant wrote that Britain?s ?conscious and deliberate bleeding of India? [was the] greatest crime in all history?. He was not the only one to denounce the rapacity and cruelty of British rule, and his assessment was not exaggerated. Almost thirty-five million Indians died because of acts of commission and omission by the British?in famines, epidemics, communal riots and wholesale slaughter like the reprisal killings after the 1857 War of Independence and the Amritsar massacre of 1919. Besides the deaths of Indians, British rule impoverished India in a manner that beggars belief. When the East India Company took control of the country, in the chaos that ensued after the collapse of the Mughal empire, India?s share of world GDP was 23 percent. When the British left it was just above 3 percent. The British empire in India began with the East India Company, incorporated in 1600, by royal charter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I, to trade in silk, spices and other profitable Indian commodities. Within a century and a half, the Company had become a power to reckon with in India. In 1757, under the command of Robert Clive, Company forces defeated the ruling Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula of Bengal at Plassey, through a combination of superior artillery and even more superior chicanery. A few years later, the young and weakened Mughal emperor, Shah Alam II, was browbeaten into issuing an edict that replaced his own revenue officials with the Company?s representatives. Over the next several decades, the East India Company, backed by the British government, extended its control over most of India, ruling with a combination of extortion, double-dealing, and outright corruption backed by violence and superior force. This state of affairs continued until 1857, when large numbers of the Company?s Indian soldiers spearheaded the first major rebellion against colonial rule. After the rebels were defeated, the British Crown took over power and ruled the country ostensibly more benignly until 1947, when India won independence. In this explosive book, bestselling author Shashi Tharoor reveals with acuity, impeccable research, and trademark wit, just how disastrous British rule was for India. Besides examining the many ways in which the colonizers exploited India, ranging from the drain of national resources to Britain, the destruction of the Indian textile, steel-making and shipping industries, and the negative transformation of agriculture, he demolishes the arguments of Western and Indian apologists for Empire on the supposed benefits of British rule, including democracy and political freedom, the rule of law, and the railways. The few unarguable benefits?the English language, tea, and cricket?were never actually intended for the benefit of the colonized but introduced to serve the interests of the colonizers. Brilliantly narrated and passionately argued, An Era of Darkness will serve to correct many misconceptions about one of the most contested periods of Indian history.

DESCRIPTIOn:L
‘Knowledge is power, and the proverb holds true for Intelligence agencies more than any other entity.’Two events in the 1960s underlined the urgent need to restructure and revitalise India’s Intelligence system: the 1962 war against China, and the one against Pakistan in 1965, both shocking instances of failures in information gathering. The officer who would be given charge of this task was R.N. Kao—someone as unlike romanticised ideals of spies in films and novels as possible. The founder-chief of India’s Research and Analysis Wing lived and operated from the shadows. Understated and gentlemanly, he may not have looked the part, but Kao undoubtedly put Indian Intelligence on the world map. In this riveting book, authors Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket trace the roots of modern Indian espionage, and describe the newly formed R&AW’s integral role in the liberation of Bangladesh.Kao had one goal, to build an Intelligence-gathering agency that would ensure the security and integrity of India. And eventually, the legend of the ‘Kaoboys’—the nickname given to the team he built—would spread far and wide. This is the compelling tale of how it started; of covert operations, courage and quick thinking; and of how wars are won as much off the battlefield as on it.

DESCRIPTION:
Mahatma Gandhi is the most influential Indian of the twentieth century whose shadow continues to loom large over the country even sixty years after his death. He struggled and dreamt of a India free not only from the yoke of the British rule but also free from the evils of poverty, illiteracy, untouchability with all its citizens enjoying equally the fruits of freedom and prosperity. Many of his revolutionary ideas, termed as idiosyncrasies then, are fashionable concepts followed by today's generation. And the resurging popularity of 'Gandhigiri' is proof of Gandhi's continuing relevance in the twenty-first century. The book offers a fascinating peep into the mind and ideas of Gandhi and his dream for a vibrant and prosperous modern India.

Though written a hundred years ago ''Hind Swaraj'' continues to be relevant even today and is a primer for those seeking to understand the concept and true meaning of freedom. It was in this book that Gandhi for the first time formally expounded and explained his concept of swaraj and the means that should be employed for its attainment. Answers to questions such as ''what is freedom'' and ''how to achieve it'' provide an insight into the workings of the mind of the man who ultimately went on to become Mahatma.

DESCRIPTION:
'It looks to me that we need a second vision for the nation, just like the one we had when we were actively pursuing our freedom movement against alien rule. At that time the spirit of nationalism was very strong. This second vision that is needed for making India a developed nation will once again bring the spirit of nationalism to the fore.'' Having tasted the fruits of development Indians are hungry for more-more education, more opportunities, more development. But their dreams of a prosperous and united India seem precariously close to being shattered as the demon of divisive politics, the gaping economic inequalities, the increasing terror and unrest within and at our borders tear into the vitals of the nation and the very idea of nationhood. Under such conditions how do we preserve the core and concept of India and aim for development? Addressing these concerns and providing some answers is Dr. Kalam who believes that at the heart of the nation is the individual and it is only when each individual citizen achieves success that the nation can succeed. Fired by idealism yet grounded in reality, Spirit of India shows that it is possible to progress at both the individual and national level provided we abide by the principle ''that the nation is bigger than any individual or organisation'' and understand that ''only borderless minds can create a borderless society.''

'If I could overcome hardships and achieve what I have, so can anyone else. This is the message I want to convey through this book and if it can insipire even one young person to achieve his or her dream, I will feel that my effort has been truly worth it. This book is based on the mails and the questions that I have received from young people over tha last decade and my answers are based on my personal life-experiences and all that I have learnt in life. The replies are presented in a way that they become generic messages for all those readers who may be facing similar problems or situations in their lives."—from the Introduction of this book. It is remarkable that how, APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, continues to be such a popular public figure even years after demitting office. Much sought, much admired, he is an inspiration for the youth and they turn to him for advice, guidance, solace or just simply to be in touch with him. The mentoring, the directions, the solutions he provides are all based on the wisdom of his experience, as he knows well the trials and tribulations of the hard rocky road of life that he has walked from Rameswaram to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Reflecting on the challenges of personal growth which each one of us faces in our daily lives to the more complex issues confronting us as a society and as a nation, the book provides a roadmap for living an inspired and purposeful life.

DESCRIPTION:
The ideology Secularism had taken shape during the European Enlightenment (18-19 centuries). Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who had never used the term in his pre-independence writings or speeches, simply picked up a prestigious world form the Western political parlance and made it mean the opposite of what it meant in the West. The outcome of this perversion proved disastrous for the newly independent nation, as became more than obvious in due course. In pre-independent India, the 'Muslim minority' had exercised a veto on who was to be hailed as 'nationalist' and who was to be denounced as 'Hindu communalist'. Now the same 'minority' reacquired the same veto on who was to be applauded as 'secularist' and who was to be hounded out as 'communalist'. In short, the term 'secularism' in the post-independence period has been and remains no more than a euphemism for Hindu-baiting. The word 'India's' instead of 'Indian' has been used in the title of this book because there is nothing Indian about Nahruvian Secularism. In fact, the term 'secularism' in its original Western sense had remained unknown to Indian political parlance because Indians had never envisaged or experienced a theocratic dispensation before the advent of Islam and its state apparatus in this country. Even today, traditional Indian scholars do not understand what theocracy means, and how Secularism in the Western sense stands opposed to it. And this 'secularism' has not been defined as Nahruvian because it is shared in common by all political parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party.SPECIFICATION:

Description
An Indian politician looks back at her journey and recounts how the going got tougher with her every success, perhaps because she was a woman.
Life among the Scorpions recounts the deeply fascinating and often tumultuous events that mark thirty years of Jaya Jaitly’s political journey.
From arranging relief for victims of the 1984 Sikh riots, to joining politics under firebrand leader George Fernandes, to becoming the president of Samata Party—a key ally in the erstwhile NDA Government, Jaitly’s rise in Indian mainstream politics invited both awe and envy. But the going has been far from smooth. Trouble began with George Fernandes sacking Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat in 1998. Jaitly became the target. She was soon hounded by Tehelka’s stings—first concerning her son-in-law-to-be Ajay Jadeja and then herself in an alleged bribery case.
Eventually, Fernandes had to resign as India’s Defence Minister, despite being the best, and Jaitly quit as the Samata Party President. Meanwhile, she spiritedly fought booth capturing in Bihar as well as fellow party men’s egos, intervened and ensured the installation of the Samata government in Manipur. All this, even as she continued her parallel fight for the livelihood of craftsmen on the one hand, and conceptualized and ensured establishment of the first Dilli Haat (crafts market place) in 1994 on the other.
With all the backstories of major events in Indian politics between 1970–2000, including her experience of dealing with the Commission of Inquiry and courts regarding the Tehelka stings, the story of Jaya Jaitly makes for a riveting read. A powerful narrative on why being a woman in politics was for her akin to being surrounded by scorpions; this hard hitting memoir offers a perspective on the functioning of Indian politics from a woman’s point of view.
AUTHOR OF THE BOOK

Having founded the Dastkari Haat Samiti, a body of craftspeople, in 1986, she established Dilli Haat a permanent marketplace showcasing weaves and handicrafts, in 1994. Her work brings together rural artisans within India, and of India, with those of Pakistan, Vietnam, Iran, Egypt and many other countries. These programs have often been supported by the Indian Government as an instrument in diplomacy.

Description
‘Kautilya who?’ In India itself, Kautilya is mentioned for reasons that are more sentimental and nationalistic than analytical and comparative with respect to the theoretical significance of his contributions to statecraft. In academic circles, Kautilya is labelled as the ‘Indian Machiavelli’, even though the Arthashastra was written some 1800 years prior to Machiavelli’s Discorsi and Principe and is much broader in scope. This book brings the wisdom of Kautilya’s text—a tour de force in strategic thinking—to the present political discourse, emphasizing the relevance of this ancient text to contemporary world affairs. Brilliant scholarly analysis complemented with in-depth academic enquiry gives this work an edge over all that has been written on Arthashastra so far. Mitra and Liebig move beyond romanticizing Kautilya and present to the reader one of the sharpest minds in history, unmatched in its knowledge of statecraft and a theory unparalleled in strategic thinking. A must-have guide to understanding both Kautilya and the intricacies of governance.

Description
Throughout his career, S.K. Misra has flown in high winds, sometimes with them and sometimes against. As principal secretary to three chief ministers of Haryana, including the formidable Bansi Lal and Chaudhary Devi Lal; principal secretary to Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar; and secretary in the Ministries of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Agriculture, he worked closely with strong political leaders. He also developed close friendships with some of the most iconic cultural figures of the time. Among many other achievements, he directed the Festivals of India, set up the National Institute of Fashion Technology, served as chairman of INTACH and played a crucial role in creating the International National Trusts Organization (INTO). He continues to innovate with ITRHD, a new trust for rural heritage and development. In all of this, he has always maintained one thing—his integrity.
Flying in High Winds chronicles a life well lived, revealing unknown facets of the prominent personalities with whom he interacted, such as Jawaharlal Nehru, M.F. Husain, Prince Charles, Sanjay Gandhi and Ebrahim Alkazi, and behind-the-scenes history of major events in which he played a key role. Candid, enlightening and with doses of tongue-in-cheek humour, this book showcases Indian bureaucracy in a new light.

Description
Blood and fire have often blighted Afghanistan, the three Anglo-Afghan wars being among the bloodiest and the cruelest in its history. But Britain’s partitioning of Afghanistan will rank as the greatest crime of the nineteenth century. That arbitrary line which Mortimer Durand drew in 1893 on a small piece of paper continues to bleed Afghanistan and hound the world. Alas, this story remained untold until now.
Written in an inimitable style, Durand’s Curse is the result of deep research. Fascinating details from long-buried archives of history reveal for the first time a tale of intrigue and deceit against Afghanistan. First the British and then Pakistan had taken away territory that originally belonged to Afghanistan. But the divided Pathan families refuse to accept this division even now and for the last century and over, there has been a struggle to rub out the cursed line drawn across the sand.
Rajiv Dogra brings alive the wars, the tragedies and the Afghan anger against injustice in this heart-wrenching account of Afghanistan’s misfortunes. This is an absolutely riveting story of the Indian sub-continent’s history told by an important writer of our generation.

DESCRIPTION:
The ideals and values that Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya propagated and practised, which led to the growth of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, and later to the birth of the BJP, have been well-laid out in this book. Being thoroughly in sync with the ways of the RSS, he dedicated his life to serve the nation through the Sangh. This book not only traces his journey as one of the primary leaders who instilled the sense of nationality in the country, but also as one who condemned exploitation by the State. While much has been discussed and written on Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, it is not easily accessible to all. This book is an attempt to make his contributions accessible to the general readers for their understanding of his personality and principles.Main menu
