Gayatri is the most renowned of the Vedic mantras. Addressed to Savitr, symbolizing the Supreme light of all Lights, it forms part of a traditional Hindu sacrament. But in reality, there is nothing Hindu about it. A lofty prayer unmatched in its sublimity, it is as well a prayer for the whole of humanity. A japa or meditative utterance of it needs no accompanying rite and anyone can reverentially participate in it. Prof. Taimni succinctly treats all aspects of the sacred mantra.

About The Book
The Solar System offers a comprehensive picture of the streams of life, passing from stage to stage of development, to the level of humanity and beyond. This valuable work is the last of a series of books that present a coherent and sequential account of the finer bodies of Man and his role in the Scheme of Evolution. It was preceded by The Etheric Double, The Astral Body, The Mental Body, and The Causal Body, all of them by the same author.
Human evolution takes place as the soul experiences birth in different races and civilizations. The vast panaroma presented here and the details of the human constitution contained in the other books of the author, awaken insight into the glorious nature of the cosmic process, and the great future awaiting the human being on his pilgrimage towards the Eternal.
Introduction
Both before and since the publication in 1893 of The secret Doctrine, by H. P. Blavatsky, there has become available for students of occultism a good deal of information regarding the Solar System and the streams of life amongst which is our own humanity—which evolve in that system. In 1883 appeared Esoteric Buddhism by A. P. Sinnett, followed in 1896 by The Groth of the soul by the same author. In 1897 was published. The Ancient Wisdom by Annie Besant, and in 1903 this great student of the occult delivered an important series of lectures, afterwards published in book form, under the title The Pedigree of Man, dealing in greater detail than anything previously published with the Solar System, with its Chains, Rounds, Globes, Sib-races, etc. Further elaboration and details have been added by C. W. Leadbeater in various books, notably The Inner Life, Volumes I and II. and A textbook of Theosophy.
In 1913 appeared that monumental work, Man: whence, flow and Whither? In addition to these, two fascinating volumes, entitled The Story of Atlantis and Lost Lemuria, with maps of those continents, from the pen of W. Scott-Elliot, appeared in 1896 and 1904 respectively, describing in very full detail the races that inhabited those lands, and their civilisations.

Description:
An understanding of emptiness, the ultimate nature of reality, lies at the heart of Buddhist view and practice. The Heart Sutra, one of the best known and most popular of Mahayana Buddhist scriptures, contains the essence of Buddha's teachings on emptiness and the methods to develop the wisdom that understands this ultimate reality. In this explanation of the Sutra, Geshe Kelsang reveals its explicit and implicit meanings, and relates them to the five Mahayana paths that lead to full enlightenment. He also explains how an initial understanding of emptiness can be used in conjunction with the Sutra to overcome both internal and external obstacles to our happiness.

Description:
Practical Buddhism is a collection of insights and tales about practicing dharma in everyday life. These humorous accounts of the mundane successes and failures of the author and his friends offer practical guidance for anyone wishing to align their daily lives with Buddhist values and ideas. Stories about answering the door, quarreling dogs, coping with city traffic, living with cellphones, greeting others, etc. employ wit and irony to demonstrate that really effective progress in improving one s character is often made in mundane ways. The anecdotes and reflections that the author shares in this book is straight from his own life. Of course, each of us has grown up in different circumstances and encounters different situations in our lives, but no matter what culture or historical era we're from, our human minds function in very similar ways. Each of us wants to be happy and avoid suffering although different people, possessions, and places may bring us happiness or suffering. Despite this desire for happiness not misery, we lack the knowledge of what the causes for each are. In fact, we often find that the words we said or deeds we did with the conviction that they would bring us joy resulted in the opposite. The moment we get the gorgeous new car we've craved, we've entered "car hell" for the car will surely break down at the most inopportune times. The repairs will cost more than we like and may not completely fix the problem. Alongside "car hell" are situated "computer hell," "iPod and Blackberry hell," "relationship hell," and on and on. We keep looking outside of ourselves for someone or something that will bring us the satisfaction and joy we seek, yet these continually elude us. And to the contrary, the difficulties we shun find us anyway.

Description:
The Cheng weishi lun (=CWSL; T.1585), purporting to be a composite commentary on Vasubandhu's Trimsika Vijnaptimatratasiddhi, is a translation-compilation by Xuanzang (600-664 CE). with the assistance of his pupil Kuiji (632-682 CE). Xuanzang's main mission in this endeavour appears to be twofold: (i) the establishment and elucidation of the thesis of vijnaptimatra, and this predominantly on the basis of Dharmapala-Silabhadra's expositions; (ii) the harmonization of the earlier yogacara doctrinal interpretations, and in so doing also the definitive establishment of the superiority of the Mahayana bodhisattva ideal. The CWSL may be said to be one of the most precious gems in the whole of the Chinese Tripitaka. In the preface to his Shuji, Kuiji eulogizes the CWSL thus: This treatise purifies true cognition. Its expositions include the provisional as well as the ultimate teachings, going far beyond the early teachings of the historical Buddha. Its doctrines penetrate into the subtlest. They catch hold of the Prajnaparamita tenets and ride on their colourful brilliance. The treatise summarizes the essential teachings of the sutras, seeking out their hidden teachings and assimilating their purposes. It further incorporates the best of all the sastras, gathering up the most wonderful. The CWSL is a compilation containing the ten individual commentaries on Vasubandhu's Trimsika by 1. Dharmapala; 2. Gunamati; 3. Sthiramati; 4. Bandhusri; 5. Nanda; 6. Suddhacandra; 7. Citrabhanu; 8. Visesamitra; 9. Jinaputra and 10. Jnanacandra which are herewith collected together and translated in detail in a single text.
About the Author
XUANZANG (600 664) is one of the most illustrious figures in the history of scholastic Chinese Buddhism. In the Cheng weishi lun, completed in 659, Xuanzang presents Vasubandhu s Tri?sika in the context of its Indian commentaries and on the background of Yogacara works such as the Yogacarabhumi, Dasabhumi and bhidharmasamuccaya. Xuanzang had brought these and many other texts back to China in 645 after studying in India for fifteen years. He subsequently translated seventy-five works, making him the most productive of all Chinese translators from the Sanskrit, and by completing what Bodhiruci/Ratnamati and Paramartha had started out, he was the first to make the Yogacara systematically available in China. VASUBANDHU (ca. 350 430 A.D.) was born in Puru?apura in Gandhara and is, next to his half-brother Asa?ga (ca. 330 405 A.D.), the most famous personage of the Yogacara school. He originally belonged to the Sravakayana school of the Sarvastivadins and had already made a name for himself through the composition of numerous treatises when he was won over to the Mahayana by Asanga, sometime in his forties. Vasubandhu counts as the great systematizer of Buddhism and is one of the six great ornaments six great commentators of the Buddha s teaching.

The purpose of this study is to undertake an analysis of the epistemological issues inherent in the Advaita Vedanta theory of the Knowing and the known to explicate their two tiered theory of knowledge from a phenomenalistic perspective and at the same time to make sense of the overarching unity that prevails over the duality and division. The interpretation and analysis is based on Dharmaraja's Vedanta Paribhasa and its commentary Paribhasa Prakasika. The theory of perception of the text of VP is Gupta's primary focus. The present work also includes a translation of the perception chapter of the text of VP and a free reconstruction of the gloss provided on it by PP. Description:
This volume is a "state-of-the art" assessment of comparative philosophy written by some of the leading practitioners of the field. While its primary focus is on gaining methodological clarity regarding the comparative enterprise of "interpreting across boundaries" the book also contains new substantive essays on Indian, Chinese, Japanese and European thought. Comparative or cross-cultural philosophy can be seen as a relative newcomer to the field of philosophy. It has its antecedents in the emergence of comparative studies in nineteenth century European intellectual history, as well as in the sequence of East-West Philosophers Conferences at the University of Hawaii, which began in 1939. This book will prove to be of great significance in helping to define a field that is only now becoming fully self-conscious, methodologically and substantively, about its role and function in the larger enterprises of philosophy and comparative studies.

Description:
Buddhist thought and ritual will appeal to anyone interested in acquiring an authentic grasp of Buddhism as it lives and functions in today's world. The wide spectrum of Buddhist practice is represented here by the men and women who contributed to this volume. The focus on thought and ritual captures the organic interrelationship of these religious components and moves away from the compartmentalization characteristic of much religious scholarship. The reader discovers the central tenets of Buddhism, Anatta, Pratityasamutpada, Sunyatta, Nirvana and others, not as free floating curiosities, but in terms of their contemporary relevance and active participation in the formation of society and culture. Likewise, commonly practiced rituals such as the Paritta Ceremony and Mantra Recitation are analyzed in terms of their role in living Buddhism.

Description:
Here is an exposition of Buddhism conceived in a resolutely modern spirit by one of the most qualified and enlightened representatives of the religion. The book is a luminous account of fundamental principles of the Buddhist doctrine, as they are found in the most ancient texts, which are called 'The Tradition' (Agama) in Sanskrit and 'The Canonic Corpus' (Nikaya) in Pali. Dr. Rahula, who possesses an incomparable knowledge of these texts, refers to them constantly and almost exclusively. Their authority is recognized unenviously by all the Buddhist schools, which were and are numerous, but none of which ever deviates from these texts, except with the intention of better interpreting the spirit beyond the letter. The interpretation has indeed been varied in the course of the expansion of Buddhism through many centuries and vast regions, and the Law has taken more than one aspect. But the aspect of Buddhism here presented by Dr. Rahula-humanist, rational, Socratic in some respects, evangelic in others, or again almost scientific-has for its support a great deal of authentic scriptural evidence which he only had to let speak for themselves.
Review
'By far the best introduction to Buddhism available.' --R.F. Gombrich, Boden Professor of Sanskrit, University of Oxford.

Description:
Sri Nisargadatta Maharaja (1897-1981), one of the most important spiritual preceptors of the twentieth century, lived and taught in a small apartment in the slums of Bombay, India. A realized master of the Tantric Nath Lineage, Maharaja had a wife and four children. For many years, he supported himself and his family by selling cheap goods in a small booth on the streets outside his tenement. His life was a telling parable of the absolute non duality of being. The profound yet simple words of this extraordinary teacher are designed to jolt us into awareness of our original nature. Like the Zen masters of old, Nisargadatta's style is abrupt, provocative and immensely profound cutting to the core and wasting little effort on the trigger shifts in consciousness, just by gearing or even reading them. A study stream of Indians and Westerners, those fortunate enough to discover Maharaja during his lifetime, came to sit at his feet in the small loft where he received visitors. In the radiation of the sage Ramana Maharishi, he shared the highest truth of non duality in his own unique way, from the depths of his own realization. In this volume Nisargadatta provides advanced instructions for spiritual aspirants. The Ultimate medicine is not for those who like their spirituality watered down, but for serious students who will find herein powerful antidotes to unawareness.
Review
"In the Ultimate Medicine, Nisargadatta, like the great sages of old India, elucidated the nature of Ultimate Reality clearly and simply. He makes the highest Self-realization a matter of common understanding so that any sincere seeker can grasp the essence of it." -- David Frawley, OMD, author of Beyond the Mind,Tantric Yoga, and Ayurvedic Healing<br /><br />"Nisargadatta Maharaj is my greatest teacher. His words guide my writing, speaking and all of my relationships." --Dr. Wayne Dyer, author of Your Sacred Self and Your Erroneous Zones

Shri Verma has selected Sankhya-Patanjala system that explains the physical world (Universe) on the basis of Cosmic evolution; the Vaisesika-Nyaya expounds the methodology and elaborates the concepts of physics, chemistry and mechanics. Shri Verma has very systematically tried to interpret the Sankhya aphorisms and concludes that the ultimate ground to which the manifested world can be traced is Prakrti having three attributes-Sattva (existence), energy at rest or Rajas (energy that which is efficient in a phenomenon and is characterised by a tendency to move and overcome any resistance) and Tamas (mass or inertia) which resists the Rajas to do work and also resists Sattva from conscious manifestation.
