Description:

Introduction Yoga has attracted the attention of common people and Yoga Sadhakas in general but it has also motivated the Yoga Scholars who are Yoga Sadhaka as well to uncover more and more information about Yoga theory and practice both which is still lying in the cupboards of libraries in the Form of MSS. Govt. of India also through its Department of Culture is planning to take up a project, which will digitalize all the Manuscripts of Yoga protect the valuable depositories of Indian Culture from being destroyed. Scholars who are working in Indology and specially on the wisdom of Yoga are well aware about the value and importance of MSS. A person of philosophico-literary research in Yoga always requires the information about Yoga Manuscripts to expand the horizon of his knowledge in the field of Yogic Wisdom. Comprehensive information about Yoga Manuscripts scattered in various libraries was needed since long. In order to fulfill such a need the Philosophico-Literary Research Department of Kaivalyadhama S. M. Y. M. Samiti, Lonavla, prepared and published a Descriptive Catalogue of Yoga Manuscripts in the year 1989, which contained an information of 2300 Yoga MSS under 688 Titles. The effort was well appreciated in the field of Research in Yoga because it was first ever publication of its kind providing the detailed information at one place about various Manuscripts of Yoga scattered in the different Manuscript libraries. In spite of the limitations from every side such as passive and disappointing attitude of MSS Libraries, financial constraints in our Institution, other works on priority, still we could collect information about 574 yoga manuscripts for the present updated edition of Catalogue of Yoga MSS. Most encouraging and important aspect of our collection was that we have identified 185 new Yoga titles. Some of the highlighting features of the present updated edition of Catalogue of Manuscripts are -
1. We have added 185 New Title of Yoga Manuscripts
2. Earlier edition was containing 688 titles which have been reduced to 652 only. This has been done in order to justify the numbering given to be new title. We had following reasons, to reduce the numbers.
a) One and the same title was given two distinct numbers e.g. 222 and 223 in earlier edition (new no. 285). Both the numbers are having one and the same title of the MSS i.e. 'Naiskarmya Siddhi Vivaranam' and these two MSS of and the same title cannot have two different Nos.
b) With regard to numbering of other Manuscripts, we have followed the policy of all the MSS of one and the same title placed under one title No. Even though the book has been commented by different commentators. For example Old No. 353, 354 and 355 numbered distinctly on the basis of different commentators have been grouped under only one No. 352 since they all are having similar title of the book. (However this 352 no. Of old catalogue has changed to present editions - 463 No.) Thus the total No. Of Titles of earlier edition was reduced to 652 and after adding 185 new titles to it, the total No. Of titles has come to 837.
3. We approached those libraries also which have been approached by the previous editors while preparing the first edition of Catalogue and we could gather more information of MSS from them. For Example - Oriental Research Institute, Jodhpur etc.
4. We have collected information from Sanskrit Vidyalaya Library, Etawah (ESV) also.
5. We have added total information of 574 MSS and thus the present updated catalogue contains information of 2874 Manuscripts under 837 Titles.
6. We could find discrepancy in the alphabetical arrangement of the titles of the MSS in the earlier publication. We have tried to overcome this in the present updated edition. Some guidelines for using the
Catalogue : 1. The column 'Source of the MS' is very important in this Catalogue because this only can help to locate exact Manuscript required.
2. A first letter of this column signify the place and following letters signify the name of the Library/Institution - e.g. -VSUL - Here V stands for Varanasi - that is place -SUL stands for Sanskrit University Library - that is Library/Institution. The full form of Abbreviations used has been given soon after this preface. Number after these letters signify the accession number of that Manuscript in the respective Library. The information of Yoga MSS (new and old) presented in this updated volume of Catalogue would not have seen the light of the day without the help of Curators, Librarians of different MSS Libraries who have cooperated us by all means in supplying the additional information of Yoga MSS. We are extremely grateful to them all. Shri O. P. Tiwari, Secretary, Kaivalyadhama, Lonavla is a source of inspiration in the research activities in general and Philosophico-Literary Research in particular. He generously donated the Catalogue of Yoga MSS of Sanskrit Vidyalaya Library, Etawah, which was in his personal collection for the inclusion of Yogic MSS information in this updated Catalogue. We are thankful to him also for his painstaking efforts in raising financial resources towards the publication of this work. The Philosophico-Literary Research staff members - Dr. B. R. Sharma, Shri G. S. Sahay and Shri R. K. Bodhe - deserve the best compliments or executing this project of updating the MSS Catalogue through its various intricate phases and thus contributing substantial and fundamental resource material to the field of Yogic Research. We express our thanks towards Library staff of Kaivalyadhama - Mr. B. D. Kute and Mrs. A. S. Sinha for helping us in conducting correspondence to various MSS Libraries and providing Library assistance towards the present work.
Mr. P. H. Raut, who untiringly and deligently completed the work of preparing typescript within a stipulated time. Our thanks are due to him. We are also thankful to all the staff members of Kaivalyadhama for their direct/indirect help and good wishes towards the publication of this work. Mr. Tanpure's (Ace Enterprises, Pune) expertise and innovativeness in the field of printing has enhanced quality of the work in its own way or which we are thankful to him and also for the timely completion of the work. Collection of Yoga MSS is a continuously on going process and is being carried even today in the Department. And we hope that in future as we gather substantial information in this regard which could be published in due course of time.
