As folklore has it, Lord Hanuman assumed this five-faced form during Ramayana war in order to kill Ahiravana, a sibling of demon Ravana. It is said that when Lord Hanuman was out to rescue Lord Rama and Lakshmana from the clutches of the demon Ahiravana, he was confronted with the impossible task of extinguishing five burning lamps placed in different directions, all at the same time. Lord Hanuman assumed the “Panchmukha Virat Roop” or five faced body to accomplish the task, thus killing Ahiravana.

Description

The dazzling statue of the Vishnu in his virat form (omnipresent ) that he shows up in front of Arjuna at the battle field of Kurukshetra is a masterpiece of marble sculpture. Carved out of a single block of white marble, the figure shows some beautiful carvings of golden works and the smiling faces of the godheads. In the Bhagavad Gita, part of the epic Mahabharata, there is a point in the discourse between Arjuna and Krishna wherein Arjuna asks the Lord for a vision of his true form. Krishna grants this vision, both glorious and terrifying, in which Arjuna sees the entire universe inside Krishna. This great form of Krishna is called virat-rupa (omnipresent or vast form). The hands of the godheads as well as their headgears have some beautiful golden works on them. The yellow and green drapery is also impressive.

In this beautiful brass figure Nandi is shown carrying Shivalinga protected by hooded-serpent. The figure of Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva is given a resplendent touch. Nandi is the bull that served as the mount of Lord Shiva and as the gatekeeper of Shiva and Parvati. Nandi is the chief guru of eighteen masters (18 Siddhar) including Patanjali and Thirumular. The dawning of that state is consonant with the awakening of the individual.
