Description
The spectacular Lord Buddha in Vitarka mudra looks awesome. His Greek style hair, elongated ears, sharp nose, half closed eyes and the entire body all are given a royal and detail touch. There is a deep sense of refinement and gracefulness in the brass figure.
The Buddha statues are often depicted with their hands performing a number of different poses and ritual postures. There are altogether ten such Mudras. Vitarka mudra is one of the much commonly found mudra or poses. Vitarka Mudra is the mudra or a gesture representing the discussion and transmission of the teachings by the Buddha. It induces the energy of the teachings and discussions of the spiritual principles which may also involve the arguments of the ideas.
The Vitarka Mudra is usually performed by joining the tips of the thumb and the index fingers together while keeping the other fingers straight. This is similar to Abhaya as well as Varada mudra but with the thumbs touching the index fingers. The circle formed by the thumb and the index finger symbolizes the constant flow of energy and information.
Vitarka mudra is a common gesture among the Buddha statues from Dvāravatī ages in Thailand. This mudra is also sometimes, substituted for Dharmachakra Mudra. Also called "The Gesture of Debate" or "discussion" mudra, Vitarka mudra can be seen in both the sitting and standing Buddha statues.
Vitarka Mudra increases wisdom. It is a gesture of teaching or a mudra of discussion. It helps with the flow of knowledge without fear. One can practise for 30 to 45 minutes, either at once or in 10- to 15-minute intervals throughout the day and there are no side effects from this mudra. Anyone can use it and enjoy its benefits.

One mantra dedicated to Lakshmi Narsimha says: “Oh Great God Lakshmi Nrsimha, Who lives in the ocean of milk, Who holds the holy wheel as weapon, Who wears the gems of the head, Of Adhisesha as ornaments, Who has the form of good and holy deeds, Who is the permanent protection of sages, And who is the boat which helps us cross, This ocean of misery called life, Please give me the protection of your hands.”
Hiranyakashipu went to the mountain Mandara and began the severe order of penance and could successfully invoke Lord Brahma from whom he received a boon that he could be killed neither by any creature created by Brahma; either in the house nor outside it; neither either during the daytime nor at night; no weapon could cause his death and he should not die either on land or in the sky. Armed with such a boon, the demon crossed all limits and wrought havoc on heaven and earth. He even dethroned Indra, the king of heavens. Hiranyakashipu's son Prahalad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu right from his very childhood. Prahalad had not pay any attention to the orders of his father not to worship Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu is father tried to kill his son in a fit of anger. But all his attempts were foiled by Prahlad's saviour Lord Vishnu.
At last Hiranyakashipu thundered at Prahlad and asked him who was his protector? Prahalad replied: "It was Hari who gave me this courage. He is stronger than anyone else. You and I, the universe, even Brahma are nothing before his strength. He is the real Lord of the Universe.”
He shouted in rage: “Show me where is he” Prahlad replied: “He is everywhere.” The king could no longer control his anger. He hit a pillar with his mace. “Is he here?” He asked Prahlad. He drew out his sword and pounced upon the little boy. A terrible deafening sound came and as the stunned men watched, the pillar split into two and was born the Sri Hari, in the form of Narasimha with a head of a lion and the body of a man. (Nara = Man: Simham = Lion).
He ultimately killed Hiranyakashipu and saved the world.

Description
Here one of the Trinity Gods, Lord Shiva is shown seated on Nandi Bull, his vehicle. Lord Shiva is one of the most powerful deities and is responsible for the destruction of the universe. But this destruction became necessary as it is the prelude to a new beginning. He is the Supreme Consciousness that illuminates the three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Offering the threefold bilva leaves to the Shivalinga heralds the return to a level of consciousness beyond the three states, which is the fourth state, turiya. The dawning of that state is consonant with the awakening of the individual.
Shiva is believed to be at the core of the centrifugal force of the universe, because of his responsibility for death and destruction. Lord Shiva is the dissolving force in life. But Shiva dissolves in order to create, since death is the medium for rebirth into a new life. So the opposites of life and death and creation and destruction both reside in his character.
Nandi is the name for the bull which serves as the mount of Lord Shiva and as the gatekeeper of Shiva and Parvati. He is the chief guru of eighteen masters (18 Siddhar) including Patanjali and Thirumular. Temples venerating Shiva display stone images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine. There are also a number of temples dedicated solely to Nandi.
Shivratri is the night when he is said to have performed the Tandava Nritya or the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. The festival is observed for one day and one night only. This fact is said to have been declared by Lord Shiva himself, when his consort Parvati asked him as to which ritual performed by his devotees pleases him the most.
The 14th shloka of Shivmahimna Stotra says: "O three eyed Lord, when the poison came up through the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons, they were all aghast with fear as if the untimely end of all creation was imminent. In your kindness, you drank all the poison that still makes your throat blue. O Lord, even this blue mark does but increases your glory. What is apparently a blemish becomes an ornament in one intent on ridding the world of fear."
