Ek Onkar is the first phrase in the Mul Mantra of the Sikkhism meaning "there is only one God;" Ek Onkar is found in the Gurmukhi script and is consequently also part of the Sikh morning prayer, Japji Sahib. Ek Omkar is a combination of two characters: the numeral Ek (one) and the first letter of the word Onkar (God), which is also the first letter of the Gurmukh script with a specially adapted vowel symbol, and is derived from Sanskrit.
The phrase's monotheistic quality is further clarified by Guru Nanak in his composition (Guru Nanak, Guru Granth Sahib: "From Ongkaar, the One Universal Creator God, Brahma was created."
He means that Onkar is that which created Brahma and therefore preceded Brahma.
