Gayatri is the most renowned of the Vedic mantras. Addressed to Savitr, symbolizing the Supreme light of all Lights, it forms part of a traditional Hindu sacrament. But in reality, there is nothing Hindu about it. A lofty prayer unmatched in its sublimity, it is as well a prayer for the whole of humanity. A japa or meditative utterance of it needs no accompanying rite and anyone can reverentially participate in it. Prof. Taimni succinctly treats all aspects of the sacred mantra.

Devi Mahatmya
Devi Mahatmya
Description:

The Devi-Mahatmya is well-known to both devotees and scholars of the Indian Great Goddess. The central task in this study is to explore how an anonymous Sanskrit text articulates a view of ultimate reality as feminine when there is virtually no precedent in the Sanskrit for such a view. To accomplish this task, an appropriate method of scriptural analysis is developed. This involves an examination of Hindu understanding of the Puranas and of the Devi-Mahatmya in particular, along with consideration of several recent scholarly discussions, in India and elsewhere. The study culminates in annotated translations of the text's hymns.

Panini's Grammatik
Panini's Grammatik
Description:

Otto Bohtlingk was one of the greatest, its not the greatest Indologists of the nineteenth century. This was Bohtlingk's first publication which appeared in 1839-40 in two volumes. The present edition, combining those two volumes, contains Panini's sutras accompanied by a German translation and notes and the Dhatupatha and Ganapatha along with other useful indices. The Astadhyayi of Panini is even today very hard to follow and was in Bohtlingk's time an extremely challenging text. It was a pioneering work and it ought to have been evaluated in that spirit. As stated by Renou (1969), Bohtlingk's edition of the Astadhyayi was considered the standard edition in Europe. It was responsible for what might be called a 'revolution' in linguistic thinking both in Indo-European linguistics as well as in general linguistics. The investigation of Sanskrit grammar proved to be a stimulus for the study of the history of Indo-European languages. It was realized for the first time in the history of linguistics that a word could be neatly broken into root, stem-forming suffix and desinence. Bohtlingk's was the first standard text and continued to be used until new editions with detailed exegetical explanations came into being.

Perceiving in Advaita Vedanta
Perceiving in Advaita Vedanta
Description:

Advaita Vedanta is the non dualistic school of vedanta primarily explicated by Samkara. The purpose of this study is to undertake an analysis of the epistemological issues inherent in the Advaita Vedanta theory of the Knowing and the known to explicate their two tiered theory of knowledge from a phenomenalistic perspective and at the same time to make sense of the overarching unity that prevails over the duality and division. The interpretation and analysis is based on Dharmaraja's Vedanta Paribhasa and its commentary Paribhasa Prakasika. The theory of perception of the text of VP is Gupta's primary focus. The present work also includes a translation of the perception chapter of the text of VP and a free reconstruction of the gloss provided on it by PP. Stress and It's Management by Yoga
Stress and It's Management by Yoga
Description:

This monograph mainly covers our studies on the causes and management of the most common and disabling disorders of stress and strain of life. It is now well established that the brain with its known centres for sensory, intellectual and emotional functions plays the main role in maintaining a balanced condition of our body and mind by liberating required amount of neurohumors and hormones. Any disturbances of this homeostasis by genetic or environmental factors would ultimately lead to the development of the Stress Disorders. At first the changes are functional and later on bodily changes of Stress Disorders appear. In the treatment, during the acute stage, the use of tranquillizers and other drugs may help. However, if the disturbance persists, the practice of Yoga would help greatly to get over the neurohumoral changes occurring in the brain. Hence the integrated practice of Yoga has an important role to play in the prevention and treatment of Stress Diseases. All these aspects have been dealt with in the book in sufficient detail.

Couplets from Kabir (Kabir Dohe)
Couplets from Kabir (Kabir Dohe)
Description:

The book contains Kabir's couplets. Under each verse has been given a few lines in prose to help the reader grasp the underlying importance of the message of the saint-poet.
(reprint)The fifteenth century saint-poet Kabir's extempore outpourings of songs and couplets numbering thousands have been hailed widely for their deep spiritual fervour and poetic quality. They are widely read with rapture and regard by old and young alike in India. Some of his poems were translated into English by Tagore in 1915 and later by a couple of others. These have been popular among the English-speaking people at home and abroad. Kabir's couplets which are considered as rich gems for their spiritual message and worldly wisdom have not been rendered into English so far. Here is rhymed English verse translation of three hundred of them from a wide cross-section of the multifaced genius' utterances. Under each verse have been given a few lines in prose to help the reader grasp the underlying import of the message of the saint-poet.

Review
''Kabir is both a mystic and a great poet. Many in Hindi and elsewhere look up to him as a courageous social activist and the great saint of the Nirguna stream. The Dohas have been well known for their message and insight, their directness and telling effect.'' - --Focus Malayalam Writing Today

''I am happy to record my appreciation to the translation of Sant Kabir's dohas made by Sh. Gananath Das in the simple and expressive way in which Kabir himself wrote his dohas.'' - --Dr. Ram Kumar Verma

The Ritual of Battle: Krsna in the Mahabharata
The Ritual of Battle: Krsna in the Mahabharata
Description:

This book is a study of India s great epic, the Mahabharrata, against the background of Indo-European myth, epic, and ritual. It builds upon the pioneering studies in these areas by Georges Dumezil and Stig Wikander to work toward the goal of understanding how this epic s Indo-European heritage is interpreted and reshaped within the setting of bhakti or devotion-al Hinduism. The book begins with a comparative typology of traditional classical ep-ics, arguing that epic is a distinctive mythical genre, and that the Maha-bharrata in particular should be studied as part of an Indo-European epic (and not just mythical) continuum. The reshaping of Indo-European theme is then examined in relation to the Mahabharrata s central mystery : the figure of Krsna, hero and ally of the Pandava brothers in their struggles against their cousins, the Kauravas, and incarnation of Visnu. The study argues that Krsna figures in the epic at the center of a coher-ent theological ensemble that builds upon continuities in Indo-European, Vedic, and particularly Brahmanic sacrificial idioms. Ultimately, Krsna guides the forces of dharma or righteousness through a great sacrifice of battle whose eschatological background recalls Indo-European and Vedic themes, while projecting them into the Hindu bhakti cosmology of universal dissolutions, recreations, and divine grace. The study vigorously opposes attempts to explain Krsna by arbitrary theories of the Mahabharrata s growth through interpolations.

The Cult of Draupadi (Vol. 1) by Alf Hiltebeitel
The Cult of Draupadi (Vol. 1) by Alf Hiltebeitel
Description:

This is the first volume of a projected three-volume work on the little known South Indian folk cult of the goddess Draupadi and on the classical epic, the Mahabharata, that the cult brings to life in mythic, ritual and dramatic forms. It focuses on the Draupadi cult's own double mythology, moving from its storieis about Draupadi's 'primal temple' near the capital of the medieval South Indian Kingdom of Gingee to its version of the Mahabharata war on the North Indian plain of Kuruksetra. Throughout, Hiltebeitel intertwines 'regional' data, gathered from both oral and written sources, with the 'epic', drawn from the cult's own performative traditions as well as from classical versions of the Mahabharata in both Tamil and Sanskrit. He re-examines many issues critical to Indological studies and takes up them while breaking new ground in investigating the further rapport between the Hindu goddess and the Indian epic. Future volumes will treat the rituals of the Draupadi cult and the Mahabharata as seen through a Draupadi cult retrospective.

Sufis,Mystics and Yogis Of India
Description:

About the Author

Hailing from Allahabad. Sri Bankey Behari started life as a lawyer as a junior of Dr. K. N. Katju and later practised law independently. He was engaged in the famous Meerut Conspiracy and other Raja Cases. He compiled many law books. Gradually drawn to mysticism. he came into close contact with Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Ramana Maharshi and later Sri J. Krishnamurti and Sri Aurobindo. Finally he gave up every material belonging and became a sannyasin.

For eight years he went into isolation. observed vow of silence. studied, wrote and contemplated on all that is best in all religions including Christianity and Sufism. But the Gita and the Bhagavata attracted him most. As a result of sixteen years' work on the Gita, he wrote a commentary on it which won him a Doctorate in Theology.

From 1940, he was an inmate of Brindaban practising intense sadhana at the feet of a realised soul. Sankirtan and the Gita were his guide-posts and his goal in life was to see Lord Radha-Krishna face to face. "Where then is the place for my photograph in my life?" he asked.

Sri Bankey Behari passed away in 1975.

Preface

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan-that Institute of Indian Culture in Bombay-needed a Book University, a series of books which, if read, would serve the purpose of providing higher education. Particular emphasis, however, was to be put on such literature as revealed the deeper impulsions of India. As a first step, it was decided to bring out in English 100 Books, 50 of which were to be taken in hand, almost at once.

It is our intention to publish the books we select, not only in English but also in the following Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tami

How God Came Into My LifeHow God Came Into My Life
How God Came Into My Life
Description:

About the Book
Through the ages, great souls have appeared who have seen God face and have walked with Him during their lives. The may belong to different times and they may have been born in different land. But they are, all of them, Pilgrims to the Eternal who lived, moved and had their entire being in God Some of them had this The souls of some others, which they had ignorantly mortgaged to the enticements of the world, were miraculously redeemed by God and they turned a new leaf  in their lives. A few others had to struggle the hard way against obstacles to their devotion and had to face privation, poverty and even persecution. But like true devotees, they transformed these hindrances into opportunities to strengthen them in their resolve not to be deflected form their quest for God. Some of these God-intoxicated Saints often broke forth in strains of devotional poetry in which everything has sprung.

This book attempts to give glimpses of the way that God confronted these saintly personages and annexed them to himself. They are published in the hope that they will invite the reader to greater intimacy with these devotees of lthe one universal God

A Sanskrit English Dictionary
A Sanskrit English Dictionary
Description:

Sir M.Monier-Williams embarked upon Sanskrit-English Dictionary, with the primary object of exhibiting, by a lucid etymological arrangement, the structure of the Sanskrit language, the very key-stone of the science of Comparative Philology. Though all lexicographers have to rely on the work of their earlier compeers, Sir Williams` work is unique and original in its plan and execution, the utility of which is seen in its repeated reprints. This is not a mere aggregation of words and meanings but the fruit of a colossal industry and experience with the actual treatises in the original language on a number of subjects. All the words are arranged etymologically and philologically with special reference to cognate Indo-European languages. The author refers to several authors and extant works. the work includes well over 1,80,000 words. This invaluable thesaurus serves far too well the needs of researchers and lovers of Sanskrit. There is an elaborate and informative Introduction detailing the inception and progress of this huge task, successfully completed with the collaboration of devoted scholars like Prof. E. Leumann, Prof. C. Cappeller and others.

 Review:

From my experience in teaching over a half century, I can attest to the popularity of Apte's dictionaries and their usefulness to students whose main interests lie in literary works and sastras such as treatises on vyakarana, nyaya, mimamsa, and alankara. I am happy, therefore, to see and welcome this new edition of The Student's Sanskrit-English Dictionary. - George Cardona in his Foreword

The Concise Sanskrit-English Dictionary

The present Dictionary is designed to meet the long-felt need of the English-knowing reader who is interested in the study of classical as well as modern Sanskrit.

Thus, it embraces all words occuring in the general post -Vedic literature. It includes most of the important terms in Grammar. It gives quotations and references to the peculiar and remarkable meanings of words, especially such as occur in books prescribed for study in the Indian and foreign universities. It also renders explanation of important technical terms occurring in different branches of Sanskrit learning. To add to its usefulness the work includes three appendices.

There are in existence no doubt excellent Sanskrit-English dictionaries compiled by eminent scholars like Monier Williams, H.H. Wilson, V. S. Apte and L. R. Vaidya, but their bulkiness and cost prohibit a large number of users from enjoying an advantage so necessary in their study of Sanskrit. There is, therefore, a crying need for one which supplies everything required by an average reader and which is at the same time characterized by brevity and cheapness. The present compilation is intended to serve this purpose. The author in this handy work has kept out Sanskrit words which are less commonly used and has tried to avoid all technicalities as well as words which can easily be seen as simple derivatives of some given words. Thus he has been able to reduce the bulk of the dictionary without compromising its usefulness.
