In the Bhumisparsha mudra or gesture, Buddha calls upon the Earth to witness his claim to be known as “The Enlightened One. In this beautiful stone figure, the Lord points towards the earth with his right hand and in response Bhu Devi, the Earth Goddess, lets flow a stream of sacred water at Buddha’s feet. Each drop of water symbolizes an act of merit performed by Buddha in his previous incarnations on earth. The ushnisha or knot of hair on top of Buddha’s head is considered a sign of his spiritual wisdom. The Buddha’s left hand is placed on his lap with the palm upwards in the varada mudra symbolizing the bestowal of a gift.

Here the Goddess Kuan Yin is seen with Amitabha Buddha. In Sanskrit, this Chinese deity is called Padma-pâni, or 'Born of the Lotus'. Quan Yin, alone among Buddhist gods, is loved rather than feared and is the model of Chinese beauty. She is regarded by the Chinese as the goddess of mercy and was originally male until the early part of the 12th century and has evolved since that time from her prototype, Avalokiteshvara, "the merciful lord of utter enlightenment,". Avalokiteshvara is an Indian bodhisattva, who chose to remain on earth to bring relief to the suffering rather than enjoy for himself the ecstasies of Nirvana. Quan Yin was a Buddhist who through great love and sacrifice during life, had earned the right to enter Nirvana after death. However, like Avlokiteshvara, while standing before the gates of Paradise she heard a cry of anguish from the earth below. Turning back to earth, she renounced her reward of bliss eternal but in its place found immortality in the hearts of the suffering. In China she has many names and is also known as "great mercy, great pity; salvation from misery, salvation from woe; self-existent; thousand arms and thousand eyes," etc.
For centuries, Kuan Yin has epitomized the great ideal of Mahayana Buddhism in her role as "bodhisattva --literally "a being of bodhi, or enlightenment," who is destined to become a Buddha but has foregone the bliss of Nirvana with a vow to save all children of God.
Quan Yin carries the Goddess and Divine Mother aspect of Buddhism. The same Goddess and Divine energy carried by the Virgin Mary in Christianity. In the Egyptian mysteries it is carried by Isis. In Hinduism it is carried by Shakti, wife of Vishnu, by Parvarti, wife of Shiva, by Radha, wife of Krishna, and by Sita, wife of Rama.

The beautiful brass figure of the female Boddhisattva is nicely carved out. Tara is a female Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who appears as a female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism. She is known as the "mother of liberation", and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements. In Japan she is known as Tarani Bosatsu but virtually unknown in China. Tara is a tantric meditation deity whose practice is used by practitioners of the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism to develop certain inner qualities and understand outer, inner and secret teachings about compassion and emptiness. Tara is actually the generic name for a set of Buddhas or bodhisattvas of similar aspect. These may more properly be understood as different aspects of the same quality, as bodhisattvas are often considered metaphoric for Buddhist virtues. Green Tara, known as the Buddha of enlightened activity is the most common form of Tara. She is also known as White Tara representing compassion, long life, healing and serenity; also known as The Wish-fulfilling Wheel, or Cintachakra, Red Tara, of fierce aspect associated with magnetizing all good things, Black Tara, associated with power, Yellow Tara, associated with wealth and prosperity, Blue Tara, associated with transmutation of anger, Cittamani Tara, a form of Tara widely practiced at the level of Highest Yoga Tantra in the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism, portrayed as green and often conflated with Green Tara, Khadiravani Tara (Tara of the teak forest), who appeared to Nagarjuna in the Khadiravani forest of South India.
