Plants personify the divine — The Rig Veda (X.97) Trees and plants have long been held sacred to communities the world over. In India, we have a whole variety of flora that feature in our myths, our epics, our rituals, our worship and our daily life. There is the pipal, under which the Buddha meditated on the path to enlightenment; the banyan, in whose branches hide spirits; the ashoka, in a grove of which Sita sheltered when she was Ravana’s prisoner; the tulsi, without which no Hindu house is considered complete; the bilva, with whose leaves it is possible to inadvertently worship Shiva. Before temples were constructed, trees were open-air shrines sheltering the deity, and many were symbolic of the Buddha himself. Sacred Plants of India systematically lays out the sociocultural roots of the various plants found in the Indian subcontinent, while also asserting their ecological importance to our survival. Informative, thought-provoking and meticulously researched, this book draws on mythology and botany and the ancient religious traditions of India to assemble a detailed and fascinating account of India’s flora.

      Description

This text book incorporates 27 chapters framed strictly as per most recent UG and PG syllabus of Rasashashtra outlined by CCIM. The chapters, its concepts and the formulations dealt here are earnestly motivated by; ‘scientific approach’, ‘rationality’, ‘practical applicability’, ‘present day utility’, ‘feasibility’ and their ‘worthiness in the field of treatment’.

More than one method of purification and incineration of ‘Rasadravya’ are intentionally explained in the book to make the students understand the rationality behind each method. UG students may choose the easiest method advised by their learned teachers. However, for PG scholars it is better if they meticulously go through all the explained methods to evaluate, compare, and understand the rationality.

It is appealed to the readers of this text to think over the explained concepts with an open and unconventional mindset.

Hope this book will be useful to everyone in the field of Ayurveda, especially to the under graduates, the postgraduates and the students appearing for PG entrance examination.

Ayurvedic Diagnostics (Madhava-Nidana) (Set Of 2 Vols.)
Ayurvedic Diagnostics (Madhava-Nidana) (Set Of 2 Vols.)
Diagnosis forms the most significant part of medicine. The development of the science of diagnosis through successive stages of history makes not only an interesting read but it also equips one with the experiences, successes and the learning achieved by countless generations in the yore and helps one to address problems of the future in an organized way.

The pre-modern diagnostics as prevalent and propounded by seers like Caraka and Susruta and countless other scholars was precisely put together by the Madhava Nidana authored by Madhavakara somewhere in 9th century AD. The work seems to have immediately caught the attention of physicians in India and abroad who found it the most serviceable text on diagnostics. Small wonder, many scholars produced commentaries on Madhava Nidana across the country. These commentaries detailed the ideas contained in the work and on occasions, even advanced, and repudiated the assumptions of Madhavakara as well as that of great seers of the yore. A reading into the various commentaries on Madhava Nidana demonstrates the background of Argumentative Indian Prof Amartya Sen has been talking about recently. It also demonstrates the old Indian spirit of tolerance and the practice of lending a patient ear to the diverse and contradictory views. Nonetheless, it is only a truism that decline of Ayurveda mostly owed to its poor standards of diagnostics. Therefore, it is significant that an authentic text on Ayurvedic diagnosis along with is Commentary is brought to the access of English knowing readers. In preparing the present work, it was a matter of satisfaction for us as we attempted to add modern perspectives every here and there in the text.

It is hoped that through the present work, the

      Body-Mind-Spirit Integrative Medicine
The book "Body mind spirit" Integrative Medicine in Ayurveda, Yoga and nature cure produced by the well known author professor Ram Harsh Singh is a comprehensive writer up on the subject touching a wide range of related topics. Integrative medicine is an approach to life, health and cure taking into consideration the life as an unified continuum of physical body mind spirit in one sweep. The present book attempts to identify this central idea in practice of popular traditional health sciences like Ayurveda Yoga and Nature Cure. The ancient concept of body-mind-spirit continuum in the field of health care and cure is re-catching the attention of medithinkers globally once again and hence it is necessary to say that it is not a new ancient view of thought, rather it is one of the most ancient view points which formed the basic matrix of the practice of medicine in ancient India.
The book is presented in 65 brief and reader friendly chapters divided in five sections dealing with 1. Ayurvedic-Medicine and its quantum logic, 2.Nature Cure and Biopurification, 3.Yoga physiology, 4.Yoga therapy and 5.Parapsychology and occult experiences. The book describes in details the fundamental principles of Ayurveda identifying the nature of body-mind-spirit continuum in the genesis of life process, health disease, diagnostics and cure. The subsequent sections deal with yoga and Nature cure in real practice settings. The last section summarises the current trends in study and practice of parapsychology and quantum healing which is gradually gaining scientific support and evidence.

              Description

Prasuri Tantra, an integrated part of Kournara-bhrirya which is one of the Ashtangas, describes everything about pregnancy and child birth. Brihat-trayi, Laghu-trayi and Kashyapa Samhita described every aspect of pregnancy & child birth like antenatal care, natal knowledge with techniques with postnatal care and perinatal care.

Observing Rajasvala-niyama, net being exposed to Garbhopaghatakara bhavas, Pumsavana described in Samhitas may provide sufficient ground in preventing pathological conditions of pregnancy. Role of Garbha-sambhava-samagri and Shad-bhavas in pregnancy is complete in its concepts and preconceptional upgrading of these elements leads to Shreyasi-praja - is a precious contribution of Ayurveda.

Even though brief, the knowledge of Beeja (Spermatozoon & Ovum), Kshetra (The endometrial bed of un-vitiated uterus), Ritu (The fertile period), Aparya parha (Genital tract) as described in Samhitas is precise and the preparation of these elemen rs for better progeny is commendable. The role of Sattva (the psyche) in making of psychological attitudes and potentialities of fetus described in Ayurvedic texts is in completion with the present knowledge of child psychology. The version of Sarrnya has opened long back the avenue of immunological concepts related with pregnancy e.g. Acceptance of zygote by endometrium etc. Garbhini paricharya (ante-natal care of pregnant woman), Garbhini sadvritta (code of conduct of pregnant woman), Garbhini lakshana, Garbhini pariksha etc. are described on the grounds of available contemporary knowledge.

                The Author's Note

The Science of Ayurveda originated with the need to understand and cure diseases and to maintain health for human being. The correct diagnosis of a disease is essential for curing diseases. Although Ayurveda gained tremendous popularity right from inception, its usage dwindled with the advent of branches of new medicines and treatment. This is however changing now and what was looked purely as an alternative medicine, just a few years ago, is gaining mainstream following by students and doctors; and not only in India but from all over the world. The Mahayanasraddotpadasastra – The Awakening of Faith is one of the most important books in the world. Its importance is still more apparend when we consider that its doctrines are the fundamental onesd of the Mahayana Faith, which is by far the chief school of Buddhism. This Chinese version of the texts xxwas mxade by the Buddhist missionary, Paramarth, who lived in China in the Liang dynasty, A.D. 502-555.

The book is divided into five chapters which deals with Reasons for writing this books; The fundamental doctrine of the Mahayana Faith; Exposition of the Faith; The practice of the Faith, and Advantages of the Faith.

                              Translator’s Introduction

This is the title of one of the most important books in the world. A Japanese scholar has translated it The Awakening of Faith. It might also be rendered The Mahayana Faith or The Faith of the New Buddhism. Its importance is apparent when we consider the fact that of the 26,000 Buddhist monks and nuns in Japan no less than 17,000 of them belong to the Pure Land School and the True School, which regard this book as their fountain and origin.

Its importance is stilt more apparent when we consider that its doctrines are the fundamental ones of the Mahayana Faith, which is by far the chief school of Buddhism, not only in Japan, but also in China, where are the great majority of the Buddhists of the world. If we estimate the value of books by the number of adherents to their doctrines, then, after the Bible, the Koran, the Confucian Classics, and the Vedas, this volume, about the size of the Gospel of Mark, ranks next, or fifth, among the sacred books of the world.

The great value of the book is also apparent when we remember that the Eastern world had been, driven to general despair by the atheistic doctrines of primitive Buddhism, called the Hinayana School, and that it was by the doctrines of. this book, which gave rise to the Mahayana School of New Buddhism, that a gospel of great hope was preached to the greater part of the Eastern Asiatic continent. Its new doctrines were that of the One Soul immanent for good in all the universe, that of a Divine Helper of men, of individual immortalitv and growth in the likeness of God, of the importance of faith in God to produce good works and that of the willingness of the best spirits to make sacrifices to save others—the very subjects which in these modern days still OCCUPY the attention of the most thoughtful men of the world.

The book is Brahministic and Buddhistic, Indian and Western in some aspects of philosophic thought. It is profoundly philosophic, reminding one strongly of Hegel, Berkeley and G. Gore in the earlier part, and is as hard to understand as Bishop Butler’s famous Analogy; yet very practical in the latter part, therefore it has great importance arising from its high and extensive range of view.

If it be, as it is more and more believed that the Mahayana Faith is not Buddhism, properly so-called, but an Asiatic form of the same Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, in Buddhistic nomenclature, differing from the old Buddhism just as the new Testament differs from the old, then it commands a world-wide interest, for in it we find an adaptation of Christianity to ancient thought in Asia, and the deepest bond of union between the different races of the East and the West, viz., the bond of a common religion. Both Christianity and the New Buddhism hold to the transcendent and the immanent forms of God; but the East emphasi3es more of the immanent form while the West emphasises more of the transcendent. The almost universal reception of the doctrines contained in this book by both the East and the West constitutes to my mind its highest claim to our attention; for thereby we are brought face to face with a solution of the stupendous practical problem of uniting all races in one bond of religious charity!
