Description
New Enlarged Edition Though he is considered one of the foremost of India’s philosophers, Shankara is also one of the most misunderstood. Much of the misunderstanding of Shankara’s position may be due to the absence of a lucid presentation of his life and works in a comprehensive and readable form. This short monograph is an attempt to meet that need for the benefit of those who have no previous acquaintance with philosophy. Shankara was one of the most subtle of Indian philosophers, and though for him intellectual dexterity was not an end in itself, the reader will find some reasoning worthy of his steel in the following pages.

Informed by the traditional Himalayan system and enhanced by Yogrishi Vishvketu’s decades of practice, Yogãsana: The Encyclopedia of Yoga Poses brings the many aspects of yoga – historical, cultural, spiritual and physical – into a single, all-inclusive volume.

"This work in three parts with twelve prakasas and several appendices, has been critically edited on the basis of the manuscripts from the libraries of Khambhat, Jaisalmer, Patan, etc. The work holds great importance among Jain Canonical literature.
For the advancement in life and moving ahead on the true path, one requires several virtues. In Yogasastram, all these virtues, for examples, controlled life, devotion towards parents, meditation for knowledge, philosophy and conduct, truth and non-violence, reflection about the nature of the Yoga itself. Therefore, it can be really acknowledged that Sri Hemacandrasuriji Maharaja has composed a great work for the development of meritorious deeds and meditation among human beings."

The book is divided into four Chapters. Chapter I expounds the grades of action necessary for restraining the exhibitive operations of the mind. Chapter II deals with the gross impurities that have entered into our mind. Chapter III pertains to the dissolutionary change of worldly life by taking recourse to Samyama. Chapter IV explains the working of the three-fold action pertaining to the present, past and future. It reaches how the Individual Self attains release from the bondage of actions and is merged into Brahman.
The book comprises the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the commentary of Vyasa thereon, English translation of both the Text and the Commentary, Notes, Preface, Appendix and Chart.

If you are looking at the literal translation of the yoga sutras. this is a good translation and thesis. But the title by Sankara is misleading and the author denies this is the authorship of Sankaracharya, though many commentators seem to think this is Sankaracharyas (Adi Sankara). So if you are interested in Adi Sankara's commentary you will be disappointed. This is not an advaitic text, rather a commentary on yoga sutras.

The spectacular stone figure depicts Patanjali as the Adishesha. Patanjali, apart from being the Yogacharya, is also known as the Adishesha, which can be understand as "the primordial snake" or the primordial form of Lord Vishnu.
In Hindu mythology Adishesha, sometimes also known as "Ananta" (The Endless One), is the thousand-headed ruler of the Nagas, the serpent race that is thought to guard the hidden treasures of the earth. Since yogic knowledge is the ultimate the secret treasure, many yogins still bow to Adishesha before beginning their daily yoga practice. "Salutation to the king of the Nagas, to the infinite, to the bearer of the mandala, who spreads out this universe with thousands of hooded heads, set with blazing, effulgent jewels."
Here the body of patanjali is shown as being coiled to form an expansive comfortable couch on which the god Vishnu rests and reclines during the intervals of creation. The serpent's thousand heads symbolize infinity or omnipresence. These heads reach up and out like a protective canopy or umbrella over Vishnu and on that "umbrella" rests our earth.
The snake's body is soft and gentle enough to serve as a couch for a god and at the same time, firm and steady enough to support the whole earth. We endeavor to bring both of these same qualities to our asana practice : softness, comfort and ease(sukha) must be balanced with firmness, strength and steadiness of effort (sthira).

In this beautiful Buddhist painting the great Tibetan yogi is nicely painted with a deep sense of gravity.
Milarepa Yogi is a famous Tibetan yogi and poet, a student of Marpa Lotsawa, and a major figure in the history of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Milarepa's writings reflect his teachings and these writings are referred to as the Songs of Milarepa and they emphasize the temporary nature of the physical body and the need for non-attachment.

The beautiful brass image of Lord Shiva is being carved out in a most nice manner. The Lord is shown in a meditative posture and the body is given a refine treatment. Lord Shiva is considered the master of yoga and he is one of the Trinity: the other two being Lord Vishnu and Brahma.

The book is the story of a life-long friendship that turns mutuality into a sense of identity in the Divine. The reading of this book is indeed a delightful and illuminating experience. Sri Dilip Kumar has made a charming presentation to the public with profound feeling and insight of the variegated experience and wisdom of a person who was, as Ramana Maharishi truly observed,"a rare combination of a jnani and a bhakta."
